about the joy foundation
Matt Axton started the Joy Foundation in 2025 to support independent artists
and strengthen community
A musician himself, Matt Axton knows the challenges for original artistry in the current climate and saw a need to uplift artists by providing opportunities to showcase their craft and receive compensation to invest in their art.
Strengthening community and helping spread joy through music and art have been part of the Axton family’s way of life for generations and Matt looks to continue this through the Joy Foundation.
The Axton Family Legacy of Spreading “Joy” through music, community and education
Mae Boren Axton (Matt’s grandmother) was a high school teacher turned journalist and public relations specialist who worked to uplift aspiring musicians most notably Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Reba McIntire and Blake Shelton. Her efforts are continually recognized through the annual Academy of Country Music Award’s “Mae Boren Axton Service Award” and inspired the “joy” of music in the Axton family.
Hoyt Axton (Matt’s father) was a well known songwriter, musician and actor. His penned #1 hit “Joy to the World” (Jeremiah was a bullfrog) established the family motto of spreading “Joy” through music. Hoyt also helped up-and-coming musicians having them open for him at the famed Troubadour in Hollywood and created community by opening the doors to his home offering artists a place to stay, write and play.
Donna Axton (Matt’s mother) after nearly two decades touring the world as band leader/music manager for Hoyt, Donna moved into music education, becoming a renowned professor of music and psychology, Choir conductor and general beacon of musical care. For the last forty years. Through this education approach of love and artistic passion, she has continued to spread the joy of music to generations of students and Community members in the Tahoe basin and beyond.
